Summary

Utility Regulator consults on when exit fees are appropriate for small business energy contracts

Today the Utility Regulator publishes a consultation on exit fees in the small business energy markets.

This consultation follows on from our final decision paper entitled 'Measures to Enhance the Operation of the Small Business Energy Market' published in September 2018.

The consultation seeks views on our stance that exit fees in small business contracts should only be permissible during a fixed term period if the contract has a fixed price for the fixed term period or has some financial or otherwise tangible benefit that justifies the inclusion on an exit fee. If implemented this would see exit fees being restricted to only certain types of contract whereas today they are at suppliers discretion.
