The Utility Regulator (UR) is calling for feedback regarding a consultation published by SONI (the System Operator for Northern Ireland). The consultation on proposed modification to SONI’s Grid Code proposes to implement new technical requirements for all transmission connected demand facilities.
Details of the proposed Grid Code modifications can be found here, on SONI’s website. The modifications relate to Fault Ride Through, Rate of Change of Frequency and Post Fault Active Power Recovery for Demand Facilities.
SONI submitted this proposal for modification to the UR, in accordance with Paragraph 2 of Condition 16 of SONI’s Electricity Transmission License (the License). SONI are asking the UR to consider their proposal and make a decision on approval, under Paragraph 3 of Condition 16 of the License.
SONI has consulted on the modification proposal and representations have been expressed in meetings of the Grid Code Review Panel, the Joint Grid Code Review Panel, and industry webinars. We are working closely with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) to priortise a decision on the modification proposal.
Under Paragraph 4 of Condition 16 of the SONI’s Electricity Transmission License, before making a decision, the UR can make reference to further views. We are therefore providing this call for feedback as an opportunity for stakeholders to provide written or verbal representations on the proposed modification.
We are inviting feedback on the proposed modification by 5:00pm on Wednesday 6 May 2026. Responses should be emailed to: Electricity_Networks_Responses@uregni.gov.uk.
