Licence modifications to NIE Networks' Distribution Licence, on connection cost socialisation, are in effect

In March 2026, the Utility Regulator published a decision paper on modifications to NIE Networks' Distribution Licence. The modifications were required to implement and adopt the Department for Economy’s Decision on Fairer Grid Connection Costs.

These licence modifications, came into effect earlier this month, on 18 May 2026, to facilitate the increased socialisation of electricity distribution network reinforcement costs. This shifts responsibility for a portion of reinforcement costs from individual connecting customers to electricity consumers more broadly.

To support implementation of these changes, NIE Networks has revised and updated its Statement of Connection Charges (SoCC). The revised SoCC reflects the new approach to the treatment and recovery of reinforcement costs in line with the licence modifications.

The updated SoCC is available on the NIE Networks website

The revised SoCC will come into effect on 1 July 2026.

From 1 July 2026, the costs associated with all newly submitted applications will be derived from the new revised SoCC.
