Switching energy suppliers
- Check The Consumer Council website for their switching energy supplier advice for small businesses.
- Have a copy of your electricity or gas bill available as this will provide information about how much you currently pay, your tariff and your energy usage.
Things to consider
- Check to see if you can get a better deal from your current supplier.
- Check to see if you are on a fixed term contract. You may have to pay a penalty if you switch before the contract ends.
- Contact the supplier you want to switch too.
- Most suppliers charge a security deposit if you don’t pay by direct debit or if you fail a credit check.
- If your account is in arrears, your supplier may block the switch.
- Make sure you check the contract terms and conditions for key information on length of contract, variable / fixed rates, discounts, early exit fees etc.
