Authority and CER Sign MoU in Relation to All Island Electricity Market

The Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation (“NIAER”) today announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), in relation to the development of an All Island Electricity Market.

A programme of work is being developed to deliver an all island electricity market to be in place no later than July 1st 2007. The programme also includes the planning of transmission networks on an all-island basis, the adoption of a consistent market approach to renewable energy sources and the harmonisation of licensing arrangements.

The two regulatory bodieswill put in place a management structure to deliver the agreed work programme and will jointly manage the programme and share costs. Central to the programme is the joint consultation on the wholesale trading arrangements which will apply. This consultation will take place before the end of the year.
