Contestability in Connections

The Utility Regulator has a statutory duty to promote competition, where appropriate, in the generation, transmission and supply of electricity. Our forward work program 2014-15 has identified the introduction of contestability in the electricity connections market as an area where competition can be established. This will offer choice in connecting to networks, promote a decrease in prices, and reduce connection times.

The Utility Regulator issued a call for evidence on 9th September 2014 and held a workshop on 29th October 2014 on the topic of introducing contestability in electricity connections in Northern Ireland.

From our activities thus far, it has been identified that a contestability working group should be set up in parallel with our review. This will aid in the implementation of contestability and manage the issues that may arise.

The Utility Regulator would like to request volunteers to take part in this working group. If you are interested in representing your market segment, please register your interest with:

Your interest should be registered no later than 5pm on 21st November 2014. Our preference would be for registration by e-mail, including a short biography on your role within the electricity industry, your market segment, and why you are interested in contestability.

We expect there will be significant interest in being part of this working group and can’t guarantee each applicant a position. However, we will select appropriate candidates to ensure as wide a range of interests are represented as possible and value can be added to this process.
