Utility Regulator welcomes north south electricity interconnector planning decision

The Utility Regulator has welcomed today’s decision by Infrastructure Minister,  Nichola Mallon, to grant full planning permission to the north-south electricity interconnector.

Utility Regulator Chief Executive, Jenny Pyper, said:

“Minister Mallon’s decision to grant full planning permission to the north south electricity interconnector is a very welcome and significant announcement for Northern Ireland’s energy consumers.

"We have long argued that the interconnector has strategic importance and is critical to our energy future.  The interconnector will be a game changer for energy security of supply and will bring the kind of certainty that we need for households and businesses across Northern Ireland. It will allow us to maximise the benefits of the Single Electricity Market and the positive impact on competition.  Finally, the interconnector will also support the continued growth of renewable generation."
